Congratulations to Bank of Mauritius on the successful launch of the new GUARDIAN polymer banknotes, developed in collaboration with Oberthur Fiduciaire and the Bank of Mauritius.
The release of the MUR1000 banknote in December 2024 marked the introduction of cutting-edge security features, such as transparent windows unique to polymer banknotes, an intricate Cameo of the Dodo, and the innovative IRISWITCH™ Gold design for the 1000 numeral created by CCL Secure. Scheduled for release in 2025, the MUR100 and MUR200 banknotes will also boast similar design elements and advanced security features, which includes an egg-shaped window accompanied by iridescent colours on the numerals 100 and 200.
In a bid to modernise currency, these new polymer banknotes will coexist with their paper counterparts as legal tender. The Bank of Mauritius is actively collaborating with financial institutions and cash handlers to facilitate a seamless transition to the new banknotes.
"Central banks worldwide are increasingly adopting GUARDIAN™ polymer, underscoring the widespread recognition of its myriad benefits," remarked Mr. Neil Sanders, Managing Director of CCL Secure, highlighting the growing global appeal for this innovative currency substrate.
