Banco de México is the first central bank in Latin America to perform a lifecycle assessment of their banknotes. The results show that the polymer substrate has a better environmental performance than the high durability cotton substrate. This is because, although polymer production requires oil with an impact on climate change and fossil fuel depletion, the environmental burdens of the cotton substrate are greater due to the large amount of fresh water and agricultural land needed for cotton crops.
